- Until 1968, tennis players had to be ama-
- teurs to compete in tournaments like
- Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. That meant
- that they earned no prize money. But in 1968,
- the big tennis tournaments were opened up
- to professionals, as well as amateurs, and
- most of the top players turned pro.
-
- The period of tennis since 1968 is known as
- the "Open era." Before the Open era, the
- major tournaments were known as the U.S.
- National Championships (now the U.S.
- Open), French Championships (French
- Open), Australian Championships
- (Australian Open), and All-England Champ-
- ionships (Wimbledon).
-
- The arrival of the Open era changed tennis.
