  1. Until 1968, tennis players had to be ama-
  2. teurs to compete in tournaments like
  3. Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. That meant
  4. that they earned no prize money. But in 1968,
  5. the big tennis tournaments were opened up 
  6. to professionals, as well as amateurs, and
  7. most of the top players turned pro.

  9. The period of tennis since 1968 is known as
  10. the "Open era." Before the Open era, the 
  11. major tournaments were known as the U.S.
  12. National Championships (now the U.S.
  13. Open), French Championships (French
  14. Open), Australian Championships 
  15. (Australian Open), and All-England Champ-
  16. ionships (Wimbledon).
